The German supermarket chain has just taken out the prestigious Double Gold award at the fourth annual Melbourne International Spirits Competition for a whisky that sells for just $35.
Described by the judges as “phenomenal for its price”, the Highland Black Eight-Year-Old Scotch Whiskey was one of three whiskies to grab the award for its “good body, nice colour and soft finish”.
The double gold rating means the brew is rated in the top 10 per cent of the whole competition, which is blind-judged by a panel according to product and price.
It’s not the first accolade for Aldi’s cheap booze however. Last month, an $8 bottle of rosé took out another international award alongside a $6 bottle of red from Coles.
Sadly the whisky’s not available in Australian stores yet – but when it is, bottom’s up!
