Why this new TV series set in a Queensland land lease community is worth your time

In case you missed it, this week we watched the premiere of ‘The End’, a 10-episode drama produced by Foxtel, exploring three generations of family at different stages of life.

It’s a dark comedy designed to spark important conversations about ageing and it stars big names, including Dame Harriet Walter, Frances O’Connor and Noni Hazlehurst.

But part of what made the first episode so compelling, to us at least, was the setting – Halcyon Waters, a land lease community located in Hope Island on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

A stunning backdrop for a lifestyle change

Transitioning between different points in life is a big part of the series’ plot, and it’s great to see a retirement community like Halcyon Waters receive such prominent placement.

So, will the show dispel some of the myths around retirement living?

Last year, our DCM Research project identified that the number of people with positive views of villages had declined from 37% in 2018 to just 27% in 2020.

This is a shame.

A reminder to give villages and land lease communities a chance

But the same research also showed that 79% of the people who had moved into a village or land lease community rated their satisfaction between 8 and 10 out of 10, with an average across the board of 8.4 out of 10 – an incredible result.

So, what does this tell us?

People on the outside looking in are still thinking of villages negatively – but once you actually move into a village or land lease community, the benefits become clear.

Let’s hope programs like ‘The End’ help spread the good word.
