ESPN sports reporter Darren Rovell had tweeted a video of himself cutting a Four’N Twenty pie into quarters after basketball team the Philadelphia 76ers announced they would be selling the much-loved Aussie food icon at their games next season.
One of the team’s players Ben Simmons is from Melbourne, while the team’s coach Brett Brown spent more than a decade coaching in Australia.
But despite his positive review, the clip prompted widespread outrage from Australians on Twitter.
Even the police got involved, with the Queensland cops tweeting: “Steady on, you could get cautioned for treating a meat pie like that.”
The backlash was enough for Mr Rovell to extend his “sincere apologies” on Twitter: “I am sorry to all Australians for my lack of understanding on how to eat a meat pie.”
Too right. He didn’t even put tomato sauce on.
