Davy Moakes, 86, and Helen Andre, 82, had met in 1951 at art school, but were forced to call off their engagement by Helen’s parents who didn’t approve of Davy being an artist.

“It broke both their hearts but in those days you did as you were told,” Mrs Andre’s daughter, Debbie Williams told the BBC.

But after her mother was widowed for the third time, Debbie decided it was time to track Mr Moakes down.

“They got talking and rekindled their relationship and they fell madly in love… I am so happy for them,” she said.

The couple, who have outlived five spouses between them, were finally married at a registry office last week and are currently honeymooning in Cyprus.

“I’ve loved him all my life,” Mrs Andre said. “We’re together at last.”

Now that’s definitely a feel-good story.
