2016 has been an eventful year and some of the most heartstopping news has come from the conflict in Syria where government forces and rebels have been fighting since 2012.

Now seeing the reports and scale of atrocities against civilians and social media posts from many residents filming their goodbyes as the military recaptures the city this week, we can’t help but think of those trapped there – and those who have already lost their lives.

On Wednesday, Paris announced it would turn the lights of the Eiffel Tower off in solidarity with Aleppo’s people. Appreciated, but somehow helpless, our thoughts are with the residents too.
