This clever grocery store in Canada uses “embarrassing” bags to deter plastic use

This is probably the funniest environmentally friendly scheme we’ve ever heard.

The East West Market in Vancouver is shaming customers who don’t bring their own re-usable bags to the store by forcing them to carry ones that brandish embarrassing slogans instead.

Offending patrons risk walking home with a ‘Wart Ointment Wholesale’ or ‘Colon Care’ bag (both pictured), with the intent being to shame them out of single-use plastic the next time around.

In a social media post, the store points out that 1,000,000 plastics bags are used every minute – most of which will only be filled once and then thrown away.

Shop owner, David Lee Kwen, wanted to do something about it. But when he noticed that the five-cent fee on their plastic bags wasn’t doing much to reduce their use, he thought adding some public humiliation might have a stronger effect.

And so far, the project is working – more customers are bringing their own bags.

We’re not surprised!
