French burglars have committed the ultimate sin during a dramatic motorway chase after stealing €350,000 (roughly AUD$550,000) worth of gran crus Burgundy wines.
The Guardian reports the thieves targeted the luxury Relais Château hotel, the Domaine de Rymska Saint-Jean-de-Trézy, which is about a two-hour drive from Paris.
The criminals reportedly broke into the hotel’s wine cellar early on Tuesday, making off with hundreds of bottles of the good stuff in a van.
The hotel’s owner was savvy to the criminals and followed in pursuit, before calling in the French police as backup. But as they approached the van they were met with expensive bottles of wine, flung in their direction as a means of throwing them off the scent.
The thieves reportedly abandoned their vehicle after smashing into a toll barrier north of Lyon.
An inquiry has been established and police are now on the lookout for at least three culprits.
We hope they throw the book at them – theft is one thing, but wasting good wine is absolutely criminal.
