Thanking our unsung heroes: first-ever Aged Care Employee Day proves a success

The not-for-profit provider Whiddon Group launched the national day on 7 August to celebrate our aged care workforce and acknowledge the valuable work they do.

The provider has 2,200-plus employees across 19 locations from Bourke to Hornsby. CEO Chris Mamarelis says they have been increasingly looking for ways to recognise their workers and establishing a national day was the natural next step.

Whiddon employees marked the day with an array of events including pizza, barbecues, chocolates, gifts and coffee carts, with one regional site even taking their team to the cinema.

They’ve also recorded a video with residents and employees to capture the spirit of the day.

You can watch it here – it’s a great reminder of the wonderful work our aged care staff do, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

With many parts of regional Australia in drought, Chris says the day has also been a boost to workers doing it tough.

“There are thousands of people working in aged care in these areas who are still turning up to work with this added burden and this just gives them something to smile about,” he said.

We’re sure it will be even bigger and better next year.
