This week we recognised some of the dedicated volunteers who stepped up to protect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable Australians, on National Meals on Wheels Day.

Meals on Wheels is an institution for many Australians and this year the demands on the volunteer workforce were high.

CEO of Meals on Wheels Australia President Sharyn Broer says the organisation is grateful for the 76,000 people who stepped up to the plate and ensured older Australians would remain nourished and safe during the pandemic.

“Regardless of the emergency – devastating bushfires, or in a pandemic, our volunteers continue to roll up their sleeves and deliver life-changing support,” she said.

During COVID-19 additional funding was provided from the Government as states reported significant increases in demand.

For example, in New South Wales more than 25 local services reported an increase in demand between 50 – 99 per cent. There is a degree of uncertainty ahead though.

“Time and time again, whatever the emergency, Australians will look to us to support well-nourished communities and create meaningful connections… and we want to be here to do that,” Ms Broer added.
