Swiss church replaces its bells – with mobile phone ringtone

If you find listening to other people’s ringtones annoying (if I hear ABBA’s ‘Ring Ring’ one more time), spare a thought for the people of Lucerne where the local Catholic church has replaced its hourly bells with a classic iPhone ringtone while the building is renovated.

Why, you ask?

Turns out the church asked art students from the local university to come up with a solution while the bells were out of action.

They say the ringtones are supposed to point to the role that mobile phones now play in our daily lives.

“We confide everything to our mobile phone, we communicate with them when alone,” they told the BBC. “We ask them for advice. All of those tasks are actually attributed to the gods.”

A valid point – but just to make sure residents and tourists don’t go completely crazy checking their phones every five minutes, the new ‘bells’ will stop irritating everyone next week.

However with the renovations still underway, the town will now be looking for an alternative.

May we suggest Blondie’s ‘Call Me’?
