Sweet relief: an innovative bathroom designed just for older people

0

Last week, bathroom manufacturer Caroma launched its new research-based Wellbeing Aged Care range (pictured).

The designs were developed by the UNSW Faculty of Built Environment (research experts in architecture, planning and construction) as part of its ‘Liveable Bathrooms for Older People’ project.

The four-year research project surveyed 4,633 people aged 60-90 and interviewed 80 people ranging in size, height, age and sex – analysing their physical dimensions and abilities to develop evidence-based bathroom design solutions.

Lead researcher, Professor Catherine Bridge, says current bathroom designs just haven’t been built with older Australians in mind.

But Caroma’s new range has been expertly crafted in collaboration with aged care specialists (and co-designed with older people) to meet the needs of an older person.

It includes an integrated nurse call toilet suite, dementia-friendly tapware with a fitted anti-scald temperature cartridge to prevent burns, grab rails, raised toilets, rail showers, single-lever mixer taps and cistern-wide back rests.

The range is designed to not only be functional, but also stylish – because there’s absolutely no reason that our older Mums and Dads should have to live with a bathroom they don’t like!

With a background in nursing, Annie has spent over 20 years working in the health industry, including the coordination of medical support for international TV productions and major stadium events, plus education campaigns with a number of national health organisations. In recent years, she has also taken time out of the workforce to be a full-time carer, giving her first-hand experience of the challenges and rewards of this role.
