Sweden let the public name their new train – so they called it Trainy McTrainface

No, really. The name notched up a huge 49 per cent of the vote in an online and newspaper poll held by Swedish rail company MTR Express to name its four new locomotives.

The cheeky moniker is a reference to a similar poll held by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council last year in which the public voted to name a $380 million Antarctic research ship – and called it Boaty McBoatface.

The Council wasn’t happy so the poll results were thrown out and the ship christened RSS David Attenborough – prompting a public campaign for the famous broadcaster and naturalist to change his name to Boaty McBoatface.

The controversial name was eventually given to a long-range UK submarine.

But while the Research Council may have regretted its poll, MTR says they will be sticking with the people’s choice.

“We like this name,” their spokesperson told the ABC. “We think that Boaty McBoatface from [the]UK kind of got his revenge now by his cousin Trainy McTrainface winning this poll.”

Revenge – and a good laugh.
