Sports-mad Aussies drove sporting-related topics into the top seven Google searches for 2021, beating COVID-19, cryptocurrency, and Prince Philip.
“NBA” was Australia’s most searched term of the year, followed by six more sports-related keywords; non-sporting subjects didn’t get a look-in until eighth place.
Top 10 overall searches:
- NBA
- AFL
- Australia vs India
- NRL
- Euro 2021
- Wimbledon
- Olympic medal tally
- COVID NSW
- Coinspot
- Prince Philip
Non-sporting topics fared better in news searches, however, with the ever-present coronavirus topping the list, followed by the search for Perth girl Cleo Smith; other subjects included the passing of Bert Newton, the implosion of former Attorney-General Christian Porter, and Melbourne’s earthquake.
Top 10 news searches:
- COVID NSW
- Cleo Smith
- QLD COVID update
- Alec Baldwin
- Coronavirus Victoria
- William Tyrrell

Here’s hoping COVID is out of these lists entirely in 2022.
