A smartwatch for aged care residents? It’s on its way

0

Aged care provider IRT Group and Auckland-based software company Jupl have teamed up to trial a new wearable healthcare technology program for its residents.

The pilot will run Jupl’s application on Samsung Gear S3 Frontier smartwatches, using an embedded SIM card for completely mobile 24/7 monitoring and support for the wearer.

Australian alert monitoring service INS now offers a similar service – it’s available commercially for any families in the community.

The services allow customers, who may be in an emergency situation, to their central monitoring facility at the touch of a button. It can also sends the wearer’s location, as well as critical health data, to IRT or INS and family members.

IRT and INS case studies show the watches allow residents to live more independently and give peace of mind to families by monitoring their location and any distress they may have throughout the day.

We’re all in favour of it. With the latest research finding that older adults need twice as long as younger people to realise they are falling, it could prove a valuable way to ensure our aged care residents enjoy a better – and safer – quality of life.
