The conversations of life

Simple is good – making your mobile phone your personal alarm, connected to nurses 24/7

If we are over 70, we are being told that self-isolation is the new reality, for months if not for a year or more.

The first thing we notice is that nobody is around, which means if we have a fall or just don’t feel great, support is not around.

In isolation we can still get anxious, have falls, become ill.

But we don’t want to wear a pendant and we don’t want an ambulance to be the only help that an alarm calls.

There is an easy solution. The family run emergency service company INS has come up with an app that you can download to your phone that makes it a really clever but private alarm and support system.

The photo above shows that the HELP button just sits on your phone. It requires a double tap and immediately calls the INS Response Centre, which is manned 24/7 by nurses who can talk you expertly through what your problem is.

(INS also provides this service to a large number of elevator companies to soothe people when their elevator is jammed).

This cuts down the calling of ambulances significantly.

If you can’t speak, the phone and app has a GPS that can tell the Response Centre where you are, and they can talk to you even if you can’t talk back.

INS has another app for your family and they can be your first call if that is what you want. They can all have a teleconference with you through the apps – for a social catch up or if you need help.

To help people overcome the anxiety of being alone under the pandemic, INS is making the app and the Response Centre service free for two months. We have downloaded the app and find it quietly reassuring seeing it sitting on our phone.
