In times of emergency, Not For Profit organisations Sikh Volunteers Australia and Turbans 4 Australia are becoming a familiar and welcome sight with their delicious free dahl dishes.
Sikh Volunteers Australia travelled from Langwarrin, 42km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, to the NSW Northern Rivers region and alternated for eight days between Lismore and Evans Head serving their dahl for free to anyone who was hungry.
Turbans 4 Australia have travelled from their base at Clyde, 21km southwest of Sydney’s CBD, and set up a kitchen at Northern United Rugby League Club in Goonellabah, 5km east of Lismore’s city centre.
Turbans 4 Australia will also be sending truckloads of stock for the next few months to support the communities, along with ongoing grocery hamper distribution.
Sikh Volunteers Australia secretary Jaswinder Singh said he had found Lismore people to be friendly, strong and resilient since arriving.
“We have seen people who have lost everything except the clothes they are in, but their mental health, understanding and strength is amazing,” he said.
“They are coping so well, even when they don’t know where their belongings are.”
We also have to salute the volunteers giving up their time to help in this emergency.
