Retirement villages: a surrogate ‘family’ during coronavirus

0

A touching story from a retirement village in South Australia this week. Living Choice’s Woodcroft village, 20km south of the Adelaide CBD, has been under ‘semi-lockdown’ because of COVID-19.

With many residents unable to celebrate Mother’s Day with their families last weekend, staff at the village decided they would make the day special.

Dozens of chrysanthemums grown by a resident (who wants to stay anonymous) were made into mini-bouquets by the team and delivered to every female resident, along with chocolates and cards donated by members of the village’s Social Club.

“It was a monumental task, taking three hours to deliver the 184 bouquets of flowers,” village manager, Gail Pounsett, said.

“We received lots of wonderful comments, such as ‘You have made our day’; ‘We are so happy that we live in this village’; and my favourite, ‘We have loved the lockdown because you all treat us so beautifully’.”

Residents returned the favour with their own card to thank staff.

It just goes to show: even under lockdown, you are never isolated and forgotten in a retirement village.
