Residents at over-50’s community Halcyon Landing at Bli Bli on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast have been doing their bit for Australian soldiers working overseas – knitting 50 beanies in the lead-up to the northern winter.
Eight village residents are meeting once a week to knit the beanies which are being sent to troops in the Middle East as part of a national volunteer project organised by the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL).
The group has so far produced around a quarter of the beanies they plan to send, while around 200 have already been sent overseas nationally.
The village’s community manager Donna Osborne says the initiative is just another example of the tight-knit community they have at Halcyon Landing.
“Sending a beanie to Australian troops provides more than warmth for those serving in the Middle East winter; it represents our support, appreciation and recognition from home,” she said.
“It’s also a great opportunity for home owners to catch up and have fun while doing so.”
