Research confirms that having a ‘work bestie’ is actually really important

We all love having a friend at work to complain to – but did you know it’s actually good for you too?

A new study from the University of Melbourne has found that having a close confidante to vent to at work can have an extremely positive effect on your daily life.

Dr Vanessa Pouthier studied a team of colleagues at a hospital in the US for one year and found that small moments of communication (regular joking and laughter, coupled with a healthy dose of complaining), with a trusted fellow employee improved the study participants’ overall mood and strengthened their relationships.

The academic says these work friendships create a “bonding” experience, because understanding that others around you share the same problems can help staff to deal with negativity in a more constructive way.

Meet me by the water cooler then!
