It was International Nurses Day yesterday and we want to recognise the incredible work by about 22,000 registered nurses who work in the aged care sector every day.
Everyone who works in aged care is very special but registered nurses have additional responsibilities. They play a vital role in residential aged care service management, planning and delivery of services.
For the past two years the aged care RNs have had to face something they had not been trained for – the COVID-19 pandemic.
Silver Chain Group’s RDNS employs 1,200 “incredible” nurses and wanted to feature Adelaide RDNS nurse Marion Larsen-Smith, a community nurse who helps vulnerable clients stay out of hospital and remain independent in their own homes.
“I have always had a big interest in community nursing,” Marion said.
“The relationships you form are unique in the way you connect with clients in their own homes and advocate for them to ensure the best possible care with their families, primary health care networks, allied health and community organisations.”
Now with RDNS for more than a decade, Marion said the value of community nursing was immeasurable.
“It is so important, especially right now, as the hospital system could not sustain what community nursing allows, which is hospital avoidance, enabling patients to leave hospital earlier and generally taking the strain off primary health care,” Ms Larsen-Smith said.
Silver Chain National Nursing Director Lisa Turner said Silver Chain nurses provide an incredible range of clinical care and are committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of clients and communities around Australia.
“All of our nurses do an incredible job each day,” she said.
If you know a nurse, be sure to thank them for their efforts in caring for our community this week.
