Only in America: Why did the chicken hit the road?

In a tale worthy of Chicken Run, a hen in the US state of Vermont has been returned to her owners after hitching a 20-kilometre ride to the city of Burlington.

Burlington local Lo Fasano was enjoying a morning coffee when she spotted the adventurous avian wandering the Church Street Marketplace, later telling local news she didn’t know what to think.

“That’s a chicken! That’s a chicken on Church Street and I don’t know why it’s here. What can I do now aside from find who it belongs to?” she said.

After taking the bird home and consulting with local conservationists, rehabilitators, and the police – who told her they “don’t do chickens” – Lo managed to track down owner Rebecca Thibeault after putting up a Facebook post.

“I’m happy there are so many members in the Burlington Vermont Facebook community to help us when we lose things like a chicken,” Lo said.

The hen had hitched a ride in the undercarriage of a Ford truck for her journey to the big city, reaching speeds more than 100 kilometres per hour on the interstate highway.

Thankfully, Rebecca was reunited with her brave bird – who was originally named Bug but has since been renamed to Amelia after the intrepid aviator Amelia Earhart.

“First woman chicken to go across Church Street, so Amelia turned out very fine,” Rebecca says.

An adventure that turned out better than that of her namesake.
