Only in America: US politician who farted on live TV denies that he supplied it

With US President Donald Trump’s impeachment hearings getting underway this week, you would think this would top the political news coming out of the US.

But there’s nothing the Internet loves more than a good ‘fart’ story – and on Monday, Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell (pictured) supplied just that while appearing live on MSNBC.

The footage appears to show Mr Swalwell dropping what us Aussies would label a ‘ripper’ mid-sentence.

But when news site BuzzFeed tracked the Congressman down, he claimed no knowledge of the windy exchange.

“It was not me!!! And I didn’t hear it when I was speaking,” he replied in a text.

When the journalist pointed out it looked like he was trying not to laugh in the clip, Mr Swalwell again denied it was him.

He did however concede that the situation – which quickly went viral using the hashtag #Fartgate – was funny.

The TV program on which the Congressman appeared has since claimed that the sound was actually of a mug being scraped across a desk.

You can judge here for yourself.

To us, it seems like a straightforward case of cutting one loose – but you be the judge.
