Trump’s lawyer – and cybersecurity adviser – Rudy Giuliani had sent what he thought was a simple tweet criticising US special counsel Robert Mueller for issuing an indictment just as Donald Trump was heading to the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.
Unfortunately, a lack of spacing between sentences meant that Twitter automatically detected the word ‘G-20.In’ as a website and turned it into a link.
The mistake was spotted by a US website designer who immediately paid US$5 to register the domain name and turn it into a real website – complete with the message ‘Donald J Trump is a traitor to our country’.
Mr Giuliani has accused Twitter of bias by allowing someone to “invade” his tweets with a “disgusting anti-president message”.
“Don’t tell me they are not committed card-carrying anti-Trumpers,” he said.
Twitter of course has said the allegation is “completely false” – and we have to agree. Twitter doesn’t need to post anti-Trump messages – they have enough users to do it for them.
Case in point: Giuliani’s original tweet has now been liked more than 47,000 times and shared over 17,000.
We still think our own ministerial website takeover wins the day though.
