Only in America: Trump honours war veterans with message – all about his achievements

Similar to Anzac Day here, Memorial Day should be a ‘home run’ for US politicians – thank the people who have served and remember those whose lives have been lost. But the President created a stir this week after he tweeted:

“Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18 years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!”

Admittedly Trump doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to paying tribute to others. In his Mother’s Day message this year, he thanks his own mother – but left out the mothers of his children First Lady Melania Trump and his two ex-wives.

This latest tweet drew criticism from former military chiefs and politicians. Pro-LBGT veterans’ organisation VoteVets issued the bluntest statement:

We can’t be shocked though. If there’s one thing 16 months of Trump has shown, it’s all about him.
