The state had a Thursday deadline to re-tally over eight million ballots after a close result in last week’s midterm elections mandated a recount – and the President has told conservative website The Daily Caller exactly why his fellow Republican party candidates are falling behind.
“The Republicans don’t win and that’s because of potentially illegal votes,” he states.
“When people get in line that have absolutely no right to vote and they go around in circles. Sometimes they go to their car, put on a different hat, put on a different shirt, come in and vote again. Nobody takes anything. It’s really a disgrace what’s going on.”
Trump also called for new national ID guidelines, saying “If you buy a box of cereal — you have a voter ID.”
But legal experts – and social media users – saw several ‘flaws’ in his argument.
Firstly, voter fraud in the US is incredibly uncommon. Florida’s state elections department and department of law enforcement, which are both run by Republican appointees, have denied seeing any evidence of fraud.
Second, you don’t need ID to purchase your cereal. It’s not the first time the President has made the claim however. Back in July, he told a rally: “You know, if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card. You need ID.”
It seems the President has no clue what you actually need to vote – but what can you expect from a man who’s clearly never had to buy his own Weetbix.
