Only in America: Trump becomes first US President to watch a traditional Japanese sumo match

As part of a jampacked few days of golf, steak dinners, cheeseburgers and the occasional diplomatic trade talk with Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, President Trump has found himself a spectator at one of Japan’s oldest traditions – sumo wrestling.

The president, first lady Melania Trump and the Japanese PM joined around 11,500 fans at the packed-out Ryogoku Kokugikan Stadium to watch oversized, muscular men battle it out loin cloths.

Trump even had a unique trophy made specifically for the match’s champion, which he named the “President’s Cup” (pictured) – naturally, it was topped with a brass eagle (the symbol of America).

Fun fact: this isn’t Trump’s first venture into wrestling.

The President featured on World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2007 with a guest appearance that involved “body slamming” and “beating” WWE executive, Vince McMahon.
