Only in America: Dolly Parton turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump

The country music icon has revealed that she twice turned down America’s highest honour from the former US President.

Ms Parton said she had rejected the first offer because her husband was sick and the second due to the pandemic.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to people who have contributed to the security or national interests of the country, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours.

The award offer came after the singer donated $1 million to COVID-19 research as the pandemic swept the globe in April last year, NBC Today reported.

But Ms Parton says she will likely not accept the award from new President Joe Biden either because she didn’t want to appear to be making decisions based on politics.

“Now I feel like if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure,” she said.

“I don’t work for those awards. It’d be nice but I’m not sure that I even deserve it. But it’s a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it.”

We’d say the singer would be a worthy recipient – sounds like she is still working ‘9 to 5’.
