Yes, it’s true. 154 mulleted men and women from all over the country will be strutting their stuff tomorrow at the Chelmsford Hotel in the Hunter Valley town of Kurri Kurri, north of Sydney, as they battle to be named ‘best mullet of them all’.
Mulletfest will see awards given out in five categories – everyday mullet, grubby mullet (why not wash it?), ranga (redhead) mullet, ladies’ mullet and junior mullet (for the under 18’s) – before the overall winner is crowned.
Entrants will be judged on their haircut, overall presentation and stage presence, while music will be provided by pub band The Stunned Mullets (naturally).
It’s the brainchild of local hairdresser and hotel owner Laura Johnson – whose husband JJ who sports a “skullet”: shaved at the front and long at the back – and says the town has long been regarded by locals as the home of the hairstyle that’s ‘business at the front, party at the back’.
But clearly Kurri Kurri isn’t the only town that loves a mullet – the event has now received media coverage in the US, Canada and New Zealand and had to close off entries due to over-demand.
