We’re always on the lookout for the latest tips for ageing well here – but we had to laugh when we came across this list of ‘healthy’ foods.
Each one is touted as being good for your body or for your planet.
Sounds perfect – until you scroll down:
- First cab off the rank – banana peels. Apparently they’re high in fibre, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, potassium, and magnesium. Their tip is cook them down, to make the peel easier to chew (delicious).
- Crickets: it’s not the first time we’ve heard about bugs as food, but in place of your regular protein bar?
- Broccoli water – because the green vegie leeches all its vitamins into its cooking water, you should be downing it too (because there’s nothing quite like green water to whet the appetite).
- Finally, watercress – the heavy hitter of the vegetable world, this leafy green has been rated as the number one item on the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s list of ‘powerhouse foods’. Great news, except for the fact it tastes like grass.
As a keen home preserver, I’m all in favour of avoiding food waste – but I draw the line at banana peels.
Sorry planet, I’m saving my stomach instead.
