Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has scrapped plans to allow villages and aged care facilities to be co-located with sporting clubs after several developments were targeted by community action groups.
Have these NIMBYs considered where they will live when they are older though?
Cr Quirk first announced the Brisbane incentives in mid-2016 after the Council found just 1,000 new aged care rooms and retirement units were being approved every year – well below the 3,600 needed annually to meet the demands of its ageing population.
Studies show most retirement village residents move from within 20km of their family home. Without options nearby, residents may have to leave their communities and family and social networks to find suitable accommodation.
Most of us would like to stay at home as we age, but all it takes is a change in circumstance for us to need extra support.
If we don’t have villages and aged care in our own backyard, where will we go?
