Dead bodies move when they decompose, according to new study which may hold the key to unlocking deadly police investigations.
The study, from Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER), used time lapse cameras to film a decomposing body for approximately 1.5 years.
Researchers found the movement, due to insect activity, gas build up and the body shrinking and contracting due to drying out, continued over the entire 17 months of filming.
The findings of the study are believed to be valuable in helping death and disaster investigations by helping police know what victims were doing in their final moments.
The study was carried out at a “human body farm” in the bushland just outside of Sydney, where 70 donor bodies are held, reports ABC.
