Need more support, but not ready for aged care? There are options available

West Australian not-for-profit village and aged care provider Bethanie are just about to open 48 serviced apartments in the inner Perth suburb of Menora – a first for the state.

Designed to sit between what is offered in an independent living unit and an aged care facility, the one- and two-bedroom apartments are for people aged 80 and over and provide access to daily meals, weekly cleaning and laundry services as well as 24-hour support and in-room technology.

Located at their Bethanie on the Park retirement village, residents will also be able to use all of the village’s facilities including the clubhouse, wellness centre and gym.

Meeting a valuable need

Why did Bethanie introduce this option?

CEO Chris How says they saw a gap in the WA market for people wanting to retain their independence as they age.

“What these serviced apartments offer is the option to remove some of the necessary everyday tasks that can become more difficult and perhaps keep us from staying at home for longer,” he said.

It’s true. We know from our agedcare101.com.au website that it’s often the little things – such as the effort of maintaining a big garden or keeping the house clean – that encourage us to start looking into aged care options for our parents or ourselves – even if we may not feel ready to take that next step.

So having these “in-between” options available – with access to extra support – is a welcome idea.
