Myth busted: hangovers get easier as you get older

You may have noticed this but universities need to spend their research dollars so here it is: the intense head pain caused by a hangover fades as you get older.

Lead researcher Joris Vester, from the Division of Pharmacology, Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Utrecht University, in The Netherlands, made the declaration in research published in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

The research into the effects of drinking habits was gathered by an online survey on social networking site Facebook, with information from 761 drinkers of alcohol, aged 18 to 94, from The Netherlands.

It found, and it is no surprise, that young people drink more alcohol than older folk, and men drink more alcohol than women. Vester and six other researchers also discovered that the severity of a hangover declines with age.

“Pain sensitivity, lower with ageing, might be a mediator,” Vester and colleagues concluded.

In other words, you get used to the hangover feeling and just get on with life.
