Melbourne is getting actual flying taxis in new ‘Uber Air’ trial

0

No, we’re not joking.

Melbourne will join the US cities of Los Angeles and Dallas as a pilot city for Uber Air – an ambitious new aerial taxi service that will transport people in short distances via the sky for the same price as an average Uber ride.

The ride-sharing technology giant announced the project at the Uber Elevate summit in Washington earlier this week.

Uber Australia’s General Manager, Susan Anderson, said Melbourne was chosen for the pilot program because of its “unique demographic and geospatial factors, and culture of innovation and technology” (Sydneysiders won’t like that!).

But not to worry – if it’s a success, other Australian cities are expected to follow suit soon after the trial.

Test flights are expected to start in Melbourne in 2020, with commercial operations aimed for as soon as 2023. So, get ready for take-off!
