Brett Palmer had been feared drowned by police who launched a full-scale search after finding his empty kayak floating in Western Port Bay.
Instead they found him safely at home – oblivious to the fact he was a “missing person”.
The 34-year-old told police he’d been fishing from the kayak when he hooked the three-metre shark. Trying to break free of the line, its pull threw him into the water.
“She’s bit the boat and missed me leg and whatever, that was pretty, pretty surreal,” he told 7 News.
Luckily, he didn’t become bait, climbing aboard a mate’s boat and continuing his fishing.
Mr Palmer did thank the search parties for their efforts, but admitted his lucky escape had not gone down well with his partner.
“It cost me a lot of chocolate and roses … trying to keep her sweet the old darl.”
We’d say it’s only fair.
