Are we losing our nerve? Latest Australia Day lamb ad earns just five complaints

Meat and Livestock Australia’s annual Australia Day ad always makes the headlines, and this year’s campaign has been no different with widespread debate over its decision to not use the words ‘Australia Day’ and some Indigenous leaders labelling the ad “highly offensive”.

But the ad, which shows a group of Indigenous people enjoying a beach barbecue before being “invaded” by boatloads of immigrants, has prompted just five complaints to the Advertising Standards Board.

Last year’s ad featuring SBS newsreader Lee Lin Chin led to hundreds of complaints after including a scene in which a vegan’s kale was destroyed by commandos, making it the second-most complained about ad in 2016.
