Looking to downsize before retirement? These tips will help you get started

Downsizing your home marks a new stage of life, but it can also be daunting – and it’s hard to know where to begin when you have a house full of precious memories that have been collected over many years.

‘Professional organiser’ Karen Morgan and her team at Task Tamers are experts in decluttering, downsizing, relocating and home organisation – and they have some quick and easy tips to help start the process.

The Task Tamers ‘3 Ts’ method divides items into three categories: treasures, transit and trash.

“Treasures are those items that are non-negotiable such as family photos or a favourite armchair,” says Karen. “Transit items might be given to family members or be sold, and trash are of no use to anyone anymore.”

Karen says it’s also important to start easy – limiting yourself to only a room (or even a drawer) at a time and having clear goals.

Her other big tips?

Stay positive, plan ahead for what you can take with you, be realistic about how much you can get done at once, don’t be afraid to reach out to loved ones for support (or a professional at Task Tamers).

And most importantly – be kind to yourself. Make sure that as you go through this important process you take the time to stop and enjoy the memories.
