Looking for a spud to call home? The Big Potato is up for sale

0

Australia’s most famous tuber is up for grabs again for a ‘mashing’ (sorry, can’t help myself) price of $920,000 after current owners Heather and Neil Tait put the 2,000qm site up on the market.

The couple had bought the Potato – which sits on the main street of Robertson in the NSW Southern Highlands and measures 10 metres by four metres – in 2014 for $450,000 to potentially extend their supermarket, which is also up for sale at $1.2 million.

The giant tater – which is being marketed as a “unique opportunity to purchase something ‘BIG’” – is modelled on the Sebago variety of potato (read: unattractive) and was built in the 1970s by local potato grower Jim Mauger as part of a swathe of 140 ‘big things’ across Australia including the iconic ‘Big Banana’ in Coffs Harbour.

Even the listing agent however acknowledges that the Potato is a hard sell – suggesting it could be demolished or even relocated to sit behind the ‘Big Merino’ down the highway at Goulburn.

We must agree it could pass for sheep poop – but looks aren’t everything so if you’re on the hunt for a big piece of Aussie history, now’s the time to cash in your chips.
