Would you like a deck with that? Retirement living developers ‘upsize’ for downsizers

At the Halcyon Glades community in Caboolture North, 10 new homes have just been released with an extended backyard ranging in size from 56sqm to 134sqm along with larger front and rear patios.

Its project director Marie Cone says the homes are designed to appeal at people coming off acreage who want extra space for a vegie garden, garden shed or dog.

And in Victoria, land lease developer Lifestyle Communities says the average size of their homes has jumped from 90sqm to 120sqm over the last three to five years as retirees look for more spaces for entertaining and relaxing.

It makes sense. We baby boomers have grown up with the idea of the quarter-acre block. Even in retirement, we want bigger backyards and outdoor spaces – after all, we should finally have the time to enjoy them.
