Ever wanted to feel like a grizzled old sea captain, but are tragically boatless? Well, you’re in luck: a British folk group has released an album of “land shanties” for all your road-tripping needs.
The album – part of a promotional campaign by Suzuki Australia for its newest Vitara SUV – was recorded by Bristol-based band The Longest Johns, and tells the tale of an epic seven-song journey across the wide open roads to pick up some almond milk from the shop.
From the chest-thumping opener as you venture forth “To The Ends Of The Block”, through the hunt for “The White Whale” of a prime parking space and the slow, dramatic tension of looking for a petrol station in “Beyond The Light”, to merrily defying your GPS in “The Lady Of The Map”; from the slow and tender “Drive Thru To My Heart” to the joy of giving “A Mighty Wave” to someone in the same model car as you and finally erupting in a triumphant “Ode To The Road”, there’s a shanty here for every driving escapade.
“The Vitara, the flagship of our fleet, makes every trip an adventure, even if you’re just nipping down the shops,” said Michael Pachota, general manager automotive at Suzuki Australia. “So, it made sense to bring that to life with an album of Land Shanties, along with a beautifully executed integrated campaign.
“While this is the soundtrack to your Vitara we’re hoping it has broader appeal, because we want to bring every driver the feeling of adventure you get in this magnificent car.”
The album can be streamed on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, because landlubbers deserve a good shanty too.
