If you end up staying overnight, this jumps to one in four. These can range from the relatively minor to major problems – but what if you could predict your risk of complications?
Now the Grattan Institute has developed an online calculator to do just this.
The app calculates the rate of complications from elective surgery based on the reason for the admission, gender, age and length of stay, and gives you a list of the most common types of complication for each treatment.
It’s designed to help you to know what to expect before you get to hospital and ask your surgeon if there’s anything you can do to reduce your risk.
It’s a smart idea. As we covered here, it’s been shown that more Australian patients have complications in their hospital care in January because of the New Year change-over.
We can’t avoid going to hospital – so why not make sure you’re prepared ahead of time?
