“Book ninjas” are leaving books on Melbourne’s buses, trains and trams. It’s called “releasing them back into the wild”.

It’s all part of Books on the Rail, a new reading movement inspired by the Books on the Underground movement in London and started by Melbournians Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus.

A novel project

There are now around 300 books making their way around Melbourne from classics and bestselling page-turners to works by new authors.

Each book has a sticker on the front and a flyer inside to explain the project, plus readers can write their location and a review so people know how far their book has travelled – and it’s already spreading to other states.

It’s got to be better than staring at your phone on the daily commute.
