Japara aged care home residents washing their way to an updated balcony

Staff and residents at Japara the Mariner, an aged care home in South West Rocks, 100km south of Coffs Harbour, came up with a social and clever way to raise money to redo their favourite balcony.

When one of the aged care home’s younger residents frequently asked to wash cars, staff eventually relented and let him wash the company car, before an idea sprang to mind.

Seeing the joy residents got from the car washing at the same time that staff were talking about redoing a favourite balcony led to the formulation of an idea, a fundraising car wash to pay for the balcony renovation.

“Our staff have been on board from the beginning and were more than happy to have their cars cleaned by our residents. So far, we have made a whopping $200!” a company statement read.

Now the car wash has become a social gathering with some residents enjoying the washing while others take the chance to sit outside and enjoy some great conversation and laughs.

So far pots, plants and furniture have been purchased for the balcony with one resident looking to make a piece of artwork out of seashells, fishing net and driftwood.

So, if you are near Japara the Mariner and need your car washed, you are welcome to show up and help contribute to a great cause.
