There isn’t a lot for the people of Ukraine to celebrate as Russia’s horrific invasion wears on – but in a rare piece of good news, any defenders who manage to capture Russian military equipment won’t have the taxman come after it.

In a Facebook post, the Ukrainian National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) has assured citizens that any tanks or other equipment they seize from the Russian military isn’t subject to declaration on annual tax forms.

“Have you captured a Russian tank or armoured personnel carrier and are worried about how to declare it? Keep calm and continue to defend the Motherland! There is no need to declare the captured Russian tanks and other equipment, because the cost of this… does not exceed 100 living wages (UAH 248,100),” the agency said, as reported by Interfax Ukraine (248,100 Ukrainian hryvnas is equivalent to around $11,300 AUD).

According to the NACP, combat trophies are not subject to declaration in part because they were not acquired as part of a transaction, but in connection with Russia’s “full-scale aggression”.

“Thanks to the courage and victory of the defenders of the Ukrainian state, enemy military equipment usually comes to you already destroyed and disabled, which makes it impossible to evaluate it in accordance with the law on the valuation of property, property rights and professional valuation activities in Ukraine. Therefore, it is also impossible to find out how much such property costs,” it explained.

Ukrainian citizens have been fighting back against the invasion since it began last week.
