West Australian not-for-profit provider Silver Chain is currently trialling the world-first technology that will allow its doctors to appear as holograms to its 650 virtual hospital clients.
Known as Enhanced Medical Mixed Reality (EMMR), it’s been developed in consultation with Microsoft.
How does it work?
A nurse visiting a client can use the Microsoft HoloLens headset to see their care plan and record any information using a holographic dashboard, while a doctor can ‘see through the eyes of the nurse’ as the consultation takes place and access their medical record in real time.
The consultations can also be shared with family members anywhere in the world.
We think it’s a great idea. Silver Chain says their research shows 30 per cent of their clients don’t need to be in hospital and can be treated at home – saving on travel time to appointments and freeing up hospital beds for more unwell patients.
Another way technology is offering us more options to stay living at home – and out of aged care – longer.
