Help to find a house: the SA Government is investing in affordable housing for older people in state-first initiative

0

The SA Housing Authority (an organisation that helps lower income South Australians access housing services) is starting work on a new $19 million project dedicated entirely to older people in the community.

Right now, more than half the residents in SA Housing accommodation are over 55, and so the state is creating these new buildings to make sure it can keep meeting demand.

The project will feature 59 apartments across three buildings, built across the inner-Adelaide suburbs of South Plympton, Prospect and Blair Athol.

Just like any typical seniors housing development, all the apartments will be designed to meet the specific needs of their older residents – including stepless entries, handrails in bathrooms and larger doorways so that walkers and wheelchairs can easily get around.

It’s a fantastic initiative – and hopefully one that other states will continue to adopt too. Making sure our older community has access to safe, affordable housing should be an important priority for all Governments.
