France’s Fencing Federation has registered lightsabers as an official blade to be used in the competitive sport, granting the wishes of every wannabe-Jedi in the country.
Serge Aubailly, Secretary General of the Fencing Federation, says the new sport is designed to encourage more young people to exercise more by including modern technology. The sabers will be powered with colourful LED lighting just like Star Wars mastermind George Lucas intended.
Unfortunately, with lightsaber instructors still in training and practitioners only numbering in the hundreds, the sport doesn’t look like it’ll make the Paris Olympics in 2024 – but another new sport will.
Breakdancing (yes, breakdancing) has been proposed to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion in the Games.
If approved, the urban dance style will join surfing, climbing and skateboarding in their first appearances as official sports at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
