Good news: new ‘reablement’ program launches to keep older Australians moving – and living independently

The Federal Government is launching the new $29.2 million trial across five Regional Assessment Service (RAS) organisations in locations in Tasmania, the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia, until June 2020.

As part of the trial, all participants will receive an assessment of their current mobility levels and then complete a six- to eight-week reablement program.

It’s a great idea. We know as we get older improving our strength and mobility can reduce the need for support services – and even delay a move into residential care.

Participants in the trials will also have better access to basic aids, equipment and assistive technology as well as local training and information programs and hands-on support.

If it proves to be a success, the program could then be rolled out to other parts of Australia – a welcome outcome for all of us who want to stay at home longer as we age.
