Good news: GPs in NSW can now report domestic violence without consent

0

Family doctors are often the first point of call for victims of domestic violence. Now they will be able to report if they think someone is “at threat” or “at serious threat” without needing patients’ consent – helping those who may be too afraid to speak up.

Victims will also be able to consult their doctor before making an official report.

How will it work?

The patients’ details will be forwarded to the Safer Pathway program, which brings together health, community and specialist domestic violence services.

They will then receive a call from a NSW Police domestic violence coordinator who can arrange access to a range of services including counselling, housing, and financial and legal assistance, and security and safety upgrades.

Let’s hope it make a difference.

If you need support for domestic violence, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or MensLine Australia on 1300 78 99 78.
