Good news: Google will now tell you how you’ve been pronouncing words wrong your whole life

If you’ve ever embarrassingly been corrected by someone else for mispronouncing a word (don’t ask me how I used to say ‘hors d’oeuvres’ when I was a kid), Google has come to your rescue.

Simply go to Google on your phone or computer, type in ‘How do you pronounce [word]?’ and the search engine giant will provide you with a handy audio clip of that word’s right pronunciation.

The new feature – which is still in a trial mode – will also helpfully show you some images to help you better understand the meaning of the word (look up how to say Dr Seuss – not what you think it is).

There’s another neat trick too – if you use Google Assistant, you can also speak the word into your phone’s microphone and “receive feedback on what, if anything, can be adjusted in your pronunciation”.

This feature is already available in “American English” and will soon also roll out in Spanish.

I’m going to wait for the full Aussie version though – perfect for when I need to brush up on my ‘ocker’ accent.
